Historical significance
A creative attacker who became the outstanding figure in the fluid title-winning teams of 1987–88 and 1989–90.
Barnes was the creative and attacking centre of Liverpool's late-1980s evolution. His dribbling and scoring initially stood out, but his later adaptation into a deeper playmaking role showed an intelligence that extended his influence beyond his peak as a winger.
